Structural Engineering Career Path: EIT to PE to Principal
The full map of a structural engineering career — the FE and PE exams, the optional SE, where each license is actually required, real pass rates, and what pay and leadership look like at every stage.
A structural engineering career follows a fairly consistent arc — from the first fundamentals exam through professional licensure to the leadership roles where the work changes from design to direction. But the labels on that arc are easy to misread: EIT, PE, SE, and the various leadership titles mean different things in different states and different firms. This guide maps the full path, with current requirements, real pass rates, and where pay actually lands, so you can plan your own route — or evaluate a candidate's — with confidence.

01The three requirements every path is built on
Nearly every state licensing board builds its requirements on the same three legs, and they largely have to happen in order: an accredited degree, roughly four years of progressive experience under a licensed engineer, and two national exams — the FE first, then the PE.[4]
- Education — "A degree from a program accredited by ABET, or equivalent education as defined by your state or territory's licensing board."[4]
- Experience — "Roughly four years of progressive engineering work supervised by a licensed PE. Some boards let a graduate degree count toward part of it."[4]
- Examination — "The Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam first, then the Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) exam in your discipline."[4]
02Stage 1 — The EIT/EI and the FE exam
The Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam is "generally your first step in the process of becoming a licensed professional engineer (P.E.)."[1] It is a computer-based, 110-question exam administered year-round, with a $225 fee payable to NCEES.[1] Passing it earns you the title Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Engineer Intern (EI), depending on your jurisdiction.[4]
Take it early. It is "designed for recent graduates and students who are close to finishing an undergraduate engineering degree,"[1] and it covers broad undergraduate-level content that is easiest to pass while it is still fresh. The most recent NCEES data shows a 66% first-time pass rate for the FE Civil exam among examinees from ABET-accredited programs (6,247 first-time examinees, reported July 2026).[1]
03Stage 2 — Four years of progressive experience
Between the FE and the PE sits the least glamorous and most important stage: accumulating qualifying experience. Most boards require work supervised by a licensed PE, and the keyword is progressive — your responsibilities should grow over time.[4] The practical habits you build here are what make the difference between a clean application and a painful one.
- Keep a monthly log — project names, your tasks, and which PE supervised you. Reconstructing four years from memory is miserable.[4]
- Ask to work under licensed engineers, and push for work that builds analysis and design depth, coordination skills, and judgment.[4]
- Learn your jurisdiction's rules early: some states let you sit for the PE before all experience is complete; others require the full four years first.[4]
04Stage 3 — The PE license (PE Civil: Structural)
The Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) exam "tests for a minimum level of competency in a particular engineering discipline" and is "designed for engineers with a minimum of four years of post-college work experience."[2] For structural engineers, the standard route is PE Civil: Structural — an 80-question, computer-based exam with a $400 fee, offered year-round.[2]
The PE is the milestone that changes your legal status: it grants the authority to practice engineering, take responsible charge of work, and sign and seal engineering documents.[4] The most recent data shows a 62% first-time pass rate for PE Civil: Structural (1,624 first-time examinees, July 2026), with a 43% repeat pass rate.[2]
Expect state-specific add-ons on top of the national exams — ethics or law exams, and in some states additional technical exams such as California's seismic and surveying exams.[4]
05Stage 4 — The Structural Engineer (SE), the optional higher tier
Some structural engineers pursue the Structural Engineer (SE) license, "a higher-tier credential that is required in some states, recognized in others, and optional everywhere else."[4] It is focused on advanced structural engineering and, in most states, can be used in place of the PE.[4]
The exam itself has changed recently, so older descriptions of a "16-hour, two-day" exam are out of date. Today the PE Structural exam is computer-based and "composed of two components — vertical and lateral," each of which includes a breadth section and a depth section — four separately scheduled sections in total.[3]
- Breadth sections: 55 questions (45 scored, 10 unscored pretest), a 5.5-hour exam, offered year-round beginning April 1, 2024.[3]
- Depth sections: 60 questions (40 scored, 20 pretest) beginning April 2026, a 6-hour exam built around scenarios, offered twice per year in April and October.[3]
- Each section carries a $350 fee payable to NCEES — four sections means $1,400 in exam fees alone.[3]
- You must select and pass the same depth area (buildings or bridges) for both components, and "acceptable results must be obtained on both components to pass the exam."[3]
The SE is demanding, and the pass data bears that out. The most recent figures show 44–45% first-time pass rates on the breadth sections and 37–63% on the depth sections, depending on component and area (July 2026).[3]

The transition to computer-based testing was not uncontroversial. CASE flagged in STRUCTURE magazine that the new format expanded to "four sections and a length of 21 hours," that "the total exam cost will be $1400, versus $1000 for the current exam," and that the structural exam was already "difficult, with pass rates below 40%."[6]
06Where the SE is actually required
State boards handle the SE five different ways.[4] This is the single most important nuance for planning a move — the same credential has very different legal weight depending on the state.
- Full practice act — an SE is required to practice structural engineering at all: Hawaii, Illinois.[4]
- Partial practice act — an SE is required for certain "significant structures": Alaska, California, Georgia, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington.[4]
- Title act — the state defines who may use the "Structural Engineer" title: Arizona, Idaho, Louisiana, Nebraska.[4]
- Roster designation — the state recognizes the SE designation when you apply: Alabama, Arizona, Delaware, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Mexico, South Dakota, Texas, Vermont, Wyoming.[4]
- No restrictions — the state does not distinguish between the PE and the SE: all other states.[4]
The "significant structure" threshold itself varies: in California it means public schools and hospitals, while other states define it around essential facilities and buildings over a certain height.[4] STRUCTURE magazine's summary of the strictest states is blunt — "Illinois and Hawaii only allow a structural engineer who has an S.E. license to seal structural drawings for any type of structure."[5]
07What it pays (real numbers, not a salary guide)
Structural engineers are counted within the broader "civil engineers" occupation in federal data — BLS does not break structural engineers out separately, so treat these figures as the closest reliable baseline rather than a structural-specific number.[7]
- "The median annual wage for civil engineers was $100,840 in May 2025."[7]
- The spread is wide: in May 2023, the 10th percentile was $63,220 and the 90th percentile was $150,640.[8]
- Employment of civil engineers is projected to grow 6% from 2025 to 2035 — about 24,500 new jobs — with roughly 22,700 openings per year, on average.[7]
These are national medians, and structural pay clusters heavily by market, specialty, and licensure level. The same May 2023 data put the annual mean wage for civil engineers at $115,100 in California against $95,740 in Texas.[8] A licensed SE designing significant structures in a high-seismic market sits at a different point in the range than an early-career EIT — which is exactly why no single number should be read as "the" structural salary.
08The arc beyond licensure: from designing to directing
The technical years (EIT → PE)
The first several years are about depth: analysis, detailing, code fluency, and learning to take responsibility for the correctness of your own work. The PE is the formal threshold, but the real shift is internal — moving from producing calculations under direction to owning them.
Project Engineer → Project Manager
After licensure, engineers split into two tracks. Some stay technical and deepen into subject-matter leadership. Others broaden into project management — schedule, budget, client communication, and coordinating the disciplines around them. The transition is not automatic and not for everyone; it is a shift from "get the work right" to "get the project delivered."
Associate → Principal → ownership
The top of the arc is ownership. Associates take on a broader portfolio and client relationships; principals and department or office leaders own the business of engineering — people, clients, and outcomes. At this level, you are judged less on your analysis and more on your judgment, your client relationships, and your ability to build and run a practice.
09Plan your own route — or evaluate someone else's
- If you are pre-licensure: pass the FE before or soon after graduation, and log qualifying experience from day one.[1][4]
- If you are deciding PE vs. SE: check whether your state — or the state you would move to — requires or recognizes the SE.[4]
- If you are hiring: ask what a candidate actually designs and stamps, not just what their title says — and confirm the licensure your work requires in your state.[4]
